Grand Gedeh, Liberia – In a continued effort to strengthen healthcare delivery in Liberia, the Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF, Dr. Amadou Cisse, has concluded a strategic visit to Grand Gedeh County. His visit underscores UNICEF’s commitment to improving health, nutrition, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in the region.

Dr. Cisse engaged with the Grand Gedeh County Health Team (CHT) and key stakeholders to evaluate the progress of UNICEF-supported health programs and identify areas that require urgent intervention. Discussions focused on immunization, nutrition, birth registration, reproductive health, and community health services, all essential to improving child and maternal well-being.

According to the Grand Gedeh County Health Team, the county has successfully maintained a steady vaccine supply, ensuring continuous immunization efforts. The National Community Health Program has also achieved significant success in reducing cases of malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea, largely due to the dedication of 218 Community Health Assistants (CHAs) and their supervisors.

Birth registration remains a priority in the county, with six digitalized centers recording over 2,600 births in 2024 alone. In reproductive health, UNICEF’s partnership with the Medical Consortium for Africa Initiative (MCAI) has provided specialized neonatal training for clinicians, while Buddy Clubs in schools continue to educate adolescents on reproductive health and wellness.

As part of his visit, Dr. Cisse conducted a field assessment of rehabilitated and newly constructed WASH facilities in Zwedru, including Child-Friendly Schools and the Gboleken Clinic. He reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to strengthening health, nutrition, and sanitation services in Grand Gedeh, ensuring that essential interventions reach the county’s most vulnerable populations.

The Ministry of Health expressed its gratitude to Dr. Cisse and the UNICEF delegation for visiting rural parts of Liberia to assess the current state of health services. The Ministry further extended its appreciation to UNICEF for its unwavering support in improving healthcare delivery and assisting the government in achieving universal health coverage for all Liberians.

Dr. Cisse’s visit highlights UNICEF’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of children and families in Liberia through strategic partnerships and targeted interventions in the health sector.
