Swift Response by AML & Local Firefighters Averts Major Vessel Blaze at Buchanan Port

Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – September 23, 2024 – A potentially devastating fire at the Port of Buchanan was swiftly contained due to the prompt actions of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) Fire Service and the Grand Bassa Fire Service Division.

The fire broke out on a vessel docked at the port, posing a significant threat to port operations and infrastructure. However, the quick intervention of the two fire teams prevented the fire from spreading and causing extensive damage.

According to reports from Empire TV, a local media outlet, the incident was initially detected by security personnel on duty, who immediately alerted Port Manager Hon. Kaipay. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Kaipay promptly contacted ArcelorMittal Liberia for assistance.

Within minutes, AML’s firefighting team, along with firefighters from the Grand Bassa Fire Service, arrived on the scene equipped with the necessary firefighting gear. Their coordinated efforts successfully contained the fire before it could cause significant damage to the port’s infrastructure.

Hon. Kaipay expressed his gratitude for the rapid response from both fire services. “We are deeply thankful for the swift action taken by ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Grand Bassa Fire Service Division,” he stated to local media. “Their courageous and efficient efforts prevented what could have been a much more serious situation.”

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, and authorities are expected to meet with the vessel’s captain for further information.

Following the incident, many Buchanan residents took to social media to express their appreciation for the quick response. They praised the bravery and professionalism of the firefighters, whose actions safeguarded the port and averted a potential disaster.

Former Buchanan Port Manager Civicus Barsi-Giah commended AML and the fire services for their quick and effective response during that incident. He noted that the coordinated efforts of AML’s ground crew and a tugboat equipped with a water cannon were crucial in averting a larger disaster.

Reflecting on that previous incident, AML’s Safety Manager, Flomo Williams, praised the swift deployment of resources and effective coordination led by Captain Riad Alchadaydh. Captain Alchadaydh, in turn, lauded his team’s readiness and skill in handling the situation.
