Gbarpolu County – In a major step toward enhancing infrastructure and regional connectivity, the Government of Liberia has officially broken ground for the construction of a modern bridge in Gbarpolu County. This initiative aims to improve transportation, boost economic activities, and provide a safer and more efficient route for commuters and businesses in the region. The bridge, which is set to be constructed, is not just a state-of-the-art project but also a crucial infrastructure development that will connect two counties from different regions—Gbarpolu County in the west and Bong County in central Liberia.
Speaking during the Ministry of Information’s regular Thursday press briefing in Monrovia, Deputy Minister Daniel O. Sando, the Acting Spokesperson of the government, expressed deep excitement about the project, stating that infrastructure development is a key component of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s AAID (Agriculture, Infrastructure, Investment, and Development) plan for national progress.
“This bridge represents the government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and ensuring seamless mobility for our people. It will serve as a key link in our transportation network, benefiting both urban and rural communities,” Minister Sando stated.
The new Kpayaquelleh Bailey Bridge is expected to feature state-of-the-art engineering, durable materials, and enhanced public safety measures. The bridge will be 825 feet long and designed to support heavy equipment, with an elevated height of 24 feet above the maximum water level to accommodate water transportation. The construction is expected to be completed within 24 months, with the Ministry of Public Works promising strict adherence to timelines and quality standards.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Electoral District #2, Gbarpolu County, led by the Minister of Public Works and attended by lawmakers, citizens, and businesspeople from both Gbarpolu and Bong Counties. Community members expressed gratitude to the government, highlighting the hardships they have faced crossing the St. Paul River.
“Pregnant women, mothers with babies, students, and elderly people have drowned while trying to cross this river. Today, the government is finally constructing a bridge that will end these risks to our lives. We are overjoyed and cannot thank the Unity Party-led government under His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai enough. All we can say is, ‘Thank you, Mr. President!’” some citizens expressed.
Though the total cost of the project has not yet been disclosed, the bridge is expected to boost regional trade, contributing significantly to Liberia’s national economy. It is also anticipated to provide safe and efficient access to transportation and mobility in the region.
