Capitol Hill, Monrovia – As the political impasse gripping Liberia’s House of Representatives enters its seventh month with no clear resolution in sight, the Liberty Party (LP) has stepped forward with a solemn and timely call for unity, dialogue, and statesmanship. In a strongly worded statement issued Monday, LP Political Leader Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence urged lawmakers to rise above partisanship and prioritize Liberia’s peace and democratic stability over personal or political agendas.
“The time for brinkmanship is over. This is a time for statesmanship,” Senator Karnga-Lawrence stated, warning that continued deadlock not only paralyzes national governance but also risks eroding public trust in Liberia’s democratic institutions.
The Liberty Party emphasized the principle of constitutional order, pointing specifically to Article 3 of the Liberian Constitution, which establishes the separation of powers among the three co-equal branches of government. The party commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for acknowledging the Supreme Court’s ruling in the leadership crisis, and praised the majority bloc for filing a motion for re-argument—a move LP described as an “honorable” step toward peaceful redress within the framework of law.
“This prolonged impasse threatens the peace and democracy of our country,” the LP stated. “What the people need now is not political point-scoring, but bold leadership committed to dialogue, compromise, and nation-building.”
As civic organisations, business leaders, and international stakeholders voice growing concerns over the legislative standoff’s impact on national development, the Liberty Party’s appeal seeks to reset the tone and direction of political discourse. The party laid out a simple yet powerful prescription: mutual respect, transparency in negotiations, and unwavering commitment to the national interest.
“We call on both factions in the House of Representatives to put the interest of the Liberian people above all else. Mediation and honest dialogue must be the way forward,” the statement emphasised.
With legislative activities stalled and critical national matters hanging in the balance, the Liberty Party’s intervention signals what many see as a moral appeal to conscience in a time of political fatigue and rising public disillusionment.
In closing, the party denounced efforts to exploit the impasse for political gain, warning that inflammatory tactics will only deepen national division. “Liberians deserve better. Our leaders must return to the values of service, sacrifice, and solidarity that have sustained us through our most difficult times,” said Karnga-Lawrence.
Whether or not the Liberty Party’s intervention will shift the political temperature remains uncertain, but its message is unmistakable: the stakes are too high for ego, pride, or partisan loyalty to eclipse the urgent needs of a nation in waiting.
