Capitol Hill – The Ministry of Justice of Liberia is set to launch a National Anti-Mob Justice Program as part of its efforts to combat the rising cases of mob violence across the country. The initiative aims to promote the rule of law, enhance public awareness, and strengthen law enforcement measures to reduce incidents of vigilante justice.

Mob violence has been a growing concern in Liberia, with individuals often taking the law into their own hands in response to crimes or alleged wrongdoing. These acts of instant justice have led to serious injuries, destruction of property, and even fatalities, undermining the country’s legal system.

Making the disclosure during the regular Thursday press briefing of the Ministry of Information, Deputy Minister Sando emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to addressing mob justice. He noted that the government is committed to ensuring that all citizens have access to a fair judicial process rather than resorting to violence and unlawful retaliation.

The prevalence of mob justice poses a significant threat to the legal system and the safety of citizens. The program is designed to educate the public on the dangers of mob violence, encourage legal avenues for seeking justice, and enhance law enforcement’s ability to respond swiftly to such incidents.

The initiative will include public awareness campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of mob violence and the importance of following legal processes. Law enforcement will also be strengthened to improve police response capabilities in preventing and managing instances of mob justice. Additionally, the program will engage communities by collaborating with local leaders, religious institutions, and civil society groups to promote peace and conflict resolution. Existing laws will be reviewed to ensure stricter penalties for individuals involved in mob violence, while mechanisms for faster justice delivery will be strengthened.

Human rights organizations and civil society groups are expected to welcome this initiative, urging the government to ensure its effective implementation. Many communities resort to immediate justice due to delays in the legal system, a situation that has fueled mob violence across the country, leaving citizens in insecurity. Mob justice has long been a national issue of great concern, and there is hope that this new program will help reduce its occurrence across Liberia.

With this program, the Ministry of Justice aims to reinforce public confidence in the legal system and ensure that justice is served through lawful means rather than violent retaliation. The official launch is expected to take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, with nationwide activities planned to engage citizens in the fight against mob violence.

The upcoming launch will bring together key sectors of government, civil society actors, student-based organizations, international groups, and other integrity institutions, as well as community-based organizations, to promote and support the objectives of this project. The rule of law is a core priority under the “ARREST” agenda of this government.

The program is expected to influence positive change in society, promote law and order, and build trust in the judicial branch of government.
