Government of Liberia Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling, Urges Lawmakers to Prioritise National Interest

Capitol Hill, Monrovia — The Government of Liberia, through its official spokesperson, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, has welcomed the recent April 23, 2025 ruling of the Supreme Court, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law and the doctrine of separation of powers as enshrined in the Liberian Constitution. The ruling, stemming from a Bill of Information filed by Fonati Koffa and other lawmakers, clarified the Court’s position regarding the ongoing leadership dispute within the House of Representatives, a controversy that has fueled public concern and weakened trust in the nation’s democratic institutions.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular Thursday press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Piah emphasized the importance of the ruling in promoting national unity and peace. He urged members of the National Legislature to prioritize the interest of the country above personal or political ambitions, stressing that democratic order and institutional integrity must remain paramount. Piah reaffirmed the government’s respect for the Supreme Court as the ultimate arbiter of constitutional matters and described the Court’s decision as a necessary step toward preserving stability and reinforcing Liberia’s democratic foundations.

In addition to welcoming the ruling, the government announced plans to establish a National Resolution Committee comprising traditional leaders, religious figures, and civil society actors, tasked with helping to bring a final resolution to the impasse at Capitol Hill. Minister Piah noted that Liberia’s path to national recovery demands collective sacrifice and service above self, calling on all stakeholders to uphold the constitutional oath they pledged to serve.

The Executive Branch urged members of the Legislature to swiftly resolve their internal leadership disputes, highlighting that as a co-equal branch of government, the Legislature bears a solemn responsibility to function effectively and independently. Piah encouraged lawmakers to act with a sense of patriotism, noting that the strength of Liberia’s democracy depends on the unity and cooperation of all three branches of government.

Reiterating its commitment to the constitutional framework, the government stressed the need for collaboration among the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches in order to ensure the effective delivery of services and to foster peace and development across the country. Minister Piah concluded by urging all Liberians to remain law-abiding and to prioritize the nation above personal interests, reminding citizens that the ultimate strength of the republic lies in a collective respect for the rule of law and a willingness to make sacrifices for the restoration of national democracy and civility.
