Monrovia, Liberia – March 21, 2025: Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Namibia to attend the prestigious inauguration of President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is Namibia’s first democratically elected female president. Sirleaf’s participation underscores the significance of this historic event and aligns with her ongoing efforts to promote women’s leadership across Africa.

Making the disclosure during the regular Thursday Press briefing of the Ministry of Information, Deputy Minster Sando expressed Pres. Boakai’s explicit confidence in the former Liberian Leader to deliver on the national duty given her, especially when Liberia at this desperate moment needs the collaborative and cooperative support of all National Stakeholders in advocating for this Prestigious seat void of politics.

He further stated during her visit, Former Pres. Sirleaf will passionately lobby for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026-2027 term. As she is appointed as a special envoy by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sirleaf will engage with international leaders and diplomats attending the inauguration to garner support for Liberia’s candidacy.

Liberia’s campaign for the UNSC seat has gained momentum in recent months. At the African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa last month, Liberia, through Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for Africa’s representation in global decision-making bodies. Again just last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Nyantee was in the Republic of Mali advocating for this one but important bid. Sirleaf praised these diplomatic efforts, emphasizing Liberia’s dedication to global justice and equitable governance.

The inauguration of President Nandi-Ndaitwah marks a significant milestone for Namibia and the African continent. As the country’s first female president, her leadership symbolizes progress in gender equality and women’s empowerment in politics. Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state, has been a vocal supporter of Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency, highlighting the importance of women’s leadership in achieving sustainable development and peace.

Sirleaf’s dual objectives during her Namibia visit—celebrating a historic presidential inauguration and advancing Liberia’s international diplomatic goals—reflect her enduring commitment to fostering leadership and representation on the global stage.
