The Head of the European Union Delegation to Liberia, Madam Nona Deprez, and French Ambassador to Liberia, Madam Isabelle Le Guellec, recently visited ArcelorMittal’s sites in Buchanan and Yekepa.

During their tour, the diplomats met with staff and were given updates on the company’s work, especially the ongoing Phase II Expansion Project. They saw firsthand the improvements made to the railway, port, and mining facilities. The visit shows the growing partnership between Liberia and the international community and the shared interest in local development and sustainable growth.

The ambassadors also visited the ArcelorMittal Training Academy in Yekepa where young Liberians are learning vocational skills to prepare them for good jobs in the mining sector and beyond.

Ambassador Deprez praised ArcelorMittal’s work in Liberia. She said the company’s investment in the railway and the concentrator will help create more jobs and bring in more money for the country.

Ambassador Le Guellec also had good things to say. She said the company’s continued support to Liberia, even during hard times like the Ebola crisis, is impressive. She pointed out the big investments in the railway, the many job opportunities for Liberians, and the help to local communities, especially through vocational training.

Mr. Dimitri de Pues from the EU Delegation, who also took part in the visit, thanked ArcelorMittal for staying with Liberia through the COVID-19 pandemic and praised the company for building strong infrastructure and giving jobs to around 7,000 people.

ArcelorMittal says its goal in Liberia is to continue making a positive impact by supporting communities, creating jobs, paying taxes, and helping the country move forward in a strong and steady way.
