Monrovia, Liberia – The People’s Republic of China has donated a substantial consignment of medical equipment to Liberia to support the country’s fight against cardiovascular diseases. The donation, which includes state-of-the-art cardiology equipment, was handed over to the Liberian government in a ceremony held in Monrovia.
The initiative is part of China’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Liberia’s healthcare sector and improving access to quality medical services. Cardiovascular diseases remain a significant public health concern in Liberia, with limited access to diagnostic and treatment facilities. The donated equipment is expected to enhance the capabilities of Liberian hospitals in diagnosing and treating heart-related conditions, ultimately reducing mortality rates.
During the handover ceremony, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Yin Chengwu, emphasized China’s dedication to supporting Liberia’s healthcare system. He noted that the donation aligns with the long-standing bilateral relationship between the two nations and reflects China’s commitment to assisting developing countries in improving their healthcare infrastructure. Meanwhile, Amb. Chengwu expressed his profound gratitude to the Chinese Health Team and the John F. Kennedy Health Team for their collaboration, disclosing that the newly launched “Cardiology Construction Project” will enable Liberia to build an independent cardiology department with modern equipment and specialized medical professionals for the operation of this equipment. Amb. Chengwu, however, stated that the joint collective effort between the two governments has not only shaped bilateral cooperation in healthcare but has also paved the way for more important achievements in the future.
For the part of the government, Dr. Catherine Cooper led the Liberian health delegation during the turnover ceremony, expressing profound gratitude to the Chinese government for its generosity. She highlighted that the equipment will be properly used for effective health service delivery for citizens across the country, ensuring that more Liberians can receive timely and efficient treatment for heart-related ailments. She also acknowledged the availability of major life-saving drugs such as Entresto, Dapagliflozin, Alteplase, and Amlodipine, which are crucial in saving patients suffering from cardiological diseases.
“This donation is a significant step toward strengthening our healthcare system,” Dr. Cooper stated. “Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death in Liberia, and with this equipment, we can improve early detection and treatment, saving countless lives.”
The donated equipment includes advanced electrocardiography (ECG) machines, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and other essential tools for diagnosing and managing heart diseases. Medical professionals in Liberia will also receive specialized training to ensure the effective utilization of the new equipment.
China has been a key development partner to Liberia, supporting various sectors, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare. This latest contribution underscores the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to improving public health.
Hence, the Ministry of Information reassured the government’s commitment to quality healthcare service delivery, which is key under President Joseph Nuymah Boakai’s AAID National Development Plan for sustainable growth. Deputy Minister Sando further emphasized the importance of this donation, describing it as crucial and commendable, especially in these times when Liberians struggle with heart-related diseases.
With this donation, Liberia’s health sector is expected to take a significant step forward in combating cardiovascular diseases, offering hope to thousands of patients in need of critical medical attention.
