Bona Town Reconnected: Road Rehabilitation By AML Ends Years of Isolation

Bona, a town nestled at the base of Mount Yuelliton, is now accessible to vehicles and motorcycles for the first time in years. The once-impassable route has been revitalized with the completion of key bridges, funded through the 20% social development allocation provided by ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) for community development. This initiative was approved by local Legislators and the Nimba Project Management Committee.

Despite the construction of the bridges, the road remained largely inaccessible, with only motorcycles maneuvering along narrow footpaths used by farmers and travelers. However, AML’s Infrastructure team stepped in, deploying road equipment to improve the situation.

With the road now rehabilitated, vehicles can reach Bona, facilitating the transportation of plantains and other farm produce to markets. This development has been welcomed by Town Chief Erickson Flomo and local residents, who view it as a significant improvement for their community.

The rehabilitation project began in June 2024, with the clearing of roadside vegetation and grading of the main road from T-Gate in Yekepa through Lugbehyee to Bona. However, the work initially stalled due to the absence of a key bridge. Following the festive season, AML’s Infrastructure team resumed the project, successfully extending the road to Bona.

“We are happy that the road has finally reached our town. Now, vehicles can come to Bona to transport goods, and we can travel more easily on motorbikes. I appreciate ArcelorMittal for this initiative, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership,” said Town Chief Flomo.

He emphasized that the improved road conditions enhance safety, reduce accidents, and mitigate security risks.

Viewing this development as a new chapter in the relationship between AML and Bona, Chief Flomo expressed commitment to maintaining this partnership. He also urged local youth to refrain from activities that could undermine AML’s operations, stressing the importance of fostering a positive and cooperative environment.
