Regarded by many as the most health and safety-compliant concession in Liberia, ArcelorMittal Liberia has vowed it cannot fall short of its commitment to keep staff protected at all its workplaces.
The global steel company has this year alone completed 1.3 million work hours with no safety issues reported.
ArcelorMittal Liberia Chief Executive Officer Jozephus Coenen has reported that the company complies compliance with all health and safety measures as its phase two expansion proceeds.
“Our health and safety metrics have been rapidly improving”, he said adding, “This year, we’ve completed over 1.3M work hours with no reported incidents yet to date”.
Recently ArcelorMittal received high praise from its global leadership team on the commitment to safety, following the visit of Robin Paulmier, corporate head of Health and Safety to Liberia.
The company globally lists health and safety as a sustainable development outcome “number one” to improve quality outcomes and protect lives on the job.
Since its arrival in post-war Liberia, ArcelorMittal continues to demonstrate that the health of staff is cardinal to achieving success at all workstations.
This also comes with AML’s firm demonstration of diversity as a value that represents the sheer belief in all workplaces to show every individual is respected, and their potential is developed.
AML has also stated that as construction work on Phase Two Expansion ramps up, and as more and more contractors get mobilized on site, the Project HSE team is working closely with “all our contractors to ensure they meet AML’s high bar for safety”.
A safe and healthy workplace not only protects workers from injury and illness, it can also lower injury/illness costs, reduce absenteeism and turnover, increase productivity and quality, and raise employee morale.
In other words, ArcelorMittal commits and showcases that safety is good for business. Plus, protecting workers is the right thing to do especially in countries like Liberia where crucial health care is lacking and is most expensive while available.
The company recognized that the cost of workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths is much greater than the cost of workers’ compensation insurance alone.
This is while workers and gussets at AML facilities undergo health and safety inductions on a routine to safeguard a safe and healthy workplace that attracts and retains quality employees as an asset to a community of employees that operates more efficiently and enjoys a healthy bottom line.
