ArcelorMittal Liberia Expands Mining Transport Capacity with Major Investment in Locomotive and Wagon Fleet

In a significant boost to Liberia’s mining sector, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is expanding its fleet of locomotives and wagons, a move aimed at increasing the transport capacity for iron ore and enhancing economic opportunities nationwide.

AML currently operates 410 gondola wagons dedicated to hauling iron ore from its extraction site in Yekepa, Nimba County, to the port in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, covering a 243-kilometer stretch. By the close of 2024, the company plans to expand this fleet to 540 wagons, aligning with growing production targets. This investment not only promises to reduce turnaround times but also positions Liberia as an emerging mining hub in West Africa.

This fleet expansion is expected to provide a strong infrastructure foundation for Liberia’s mining sector. The increased capacity will not only improve operational efficiency for AML but also stimulate revenue generation, create jobs, and bolster the country’s economy. In support of the expanded wagon fleet, AML has heavily invested in upgrading its locomotive capabilities. The company now operates 13 ES44AC locomotives manufactured by Wabtec Corporation, a U.S.-based company known for its reliable and powerful 4,400-horsepower engines. These locomotives, equipped with advanced AC traction systems and state-of-the-art electronics, are well-suited for transporting heavy iron ore loads. AML also utilizes two Dash 8 locomotives for shunting, streamlining the loading and unloading processes at its facilities.

The expansion is part of AML’s larger operational strategy under its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Liberian government, targeting increasing production and transport capacity. Since taking over the Yekepa-Buchanan rail corridor, AML has invested over $800 million to restore and modernize the rail line, which had been severely damaged during Liberia’s civil war. This recent investment not only strengthens Liberia’s physical infrastructure but underscores AML’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s post-conflict economic recovery and long-term development.
